Jadeite Candle Holders.... Big Dough or Thrifty Faux?

A few months ago I read a tutorial on creating a faux jadeite cake stand (read here)... I was amazed at the way it turned out and decided to put the idea in my "to do" list for the future.

While up North a few weeks ago, I found my way to Michaels' and picked up the necessary paint.  You can find it in either satin or high gloss finish... I wasn't sure which would work best, so I bought both.  I'm not sure it makes any difference....

Last week I went to our local Dollar Tree and picked up a few of these glass candle holders.  There were several different styles, but some of my vintage jadeite pieces are ribbed on the outside and I thought these might look more authentic.  They're designed to hold tea light candles in the center.

Remember to paint the OUTSIDE of the glass (not inside) so that when it's flipped over, you're seeing the "jade-ish" color through the clear glass.  The picture above is the first coat.... I ended up applying 4 coats to the first one I did.  The brush I was using was too small and was leaving too many brush strokes... it took additional coats to smooth it out.  The second one I painted, I used a bigger/better brush and it only took 2 coats (the pic shown with the paint...)

I really like the way they turned out.... I'm on the hunt now for plain, glass plates that I can paint and use for charges in my dining room for the spring.  And a few more candle holders.... Not bad for $2 and a little paint!

Sharing the creativity....

It's Overflowing
