Got Milk?....

In addition to the Fresh Eggs sign I made for my Mother's birthday (read the details here) I also made a smaller chalk-board sign with a vintage inspired "drink milk" image I designed. The first time I laid it out, I didn't take into consideration that I wanted the bottle shape cut out (not solid, with lettering inside)

See what I mean?  Which would have been fine I guess in another application, but just not what I wanted. And, of course, my 18 year old wanted to know why in the world I had put one of my "signs" on a cutting board.  Geez.... kids... they just don't get it!!  (it didn't stay there... but it was within arms reach at the time and I didn't want to waste the vinyl!)

This one will be perfect propped on top of her Hoosier Cabinet in the kitchen with her vintage tins, etc.  For me, I've got some hardboard lying around and think I'll turn this into a chalkboard with the image justified to the left... writing space to the right.  That should look pretty cool, I think!

My sons are 17 & 18.... and they still do not put their dishes in the dishwasher unless I tell them to.  According to them, it's because they don't know if the dishes in the dishwasher are clean or dirty.  Of course I'm standing right there so they could ASK, but it's much easier, I guess, to stack them on the counter NEXT to the dishwasher and wait for the "dish fairy" to take care of them.  I guess I can be thankful that they at least scrape and rinse them for me!

This is an easy project that takes no time at all to make.  You'll need some hardboard (or lightweight, thin wood of some type), Mod Podge to adhere the cardstock sign to the board (or watered white glue works just as well) and a couple of magnets (you can re-purpose old fridge magnets, if you have them).

After you've printed out your image (use cardstock if you have it) just mount it to your pre-cut wood with ModPodge or glue, smooth it out (I use the side of a cut paint stick) and coat the top... this will help with moisture when the "dry" cycle is running.

If I have it, I'll use a spray can of clear coat to spray the finish on (versus ModPodge).  I just find it easier and quicker.... and I don't get the brush marks.  However, either one works fine... use what you have.

Both my sister and I are Leo babies... she was born the last week in July and I in the first week in August. We usually don't do "the big gift exchange" on our birthdays, but do plan one night somewhere in the middle to get together for dinner and hang out.  We've both passed the "mid century" mark, so I wanted to make something that would be appropriate for us both.

This is what I came up with and thought it would be perfect for her "card" this year... I'll most likely print it on card stock, mount it on a 5x7 piece of hardboard (which I always have on hand) and either expoxy a hanger on the back, or drill 2 holes in each of the upper corners and string a ribbon through it.

You could also just print it and put it in a frame if you have one handy.

Just click on the image to access the file to download and print.  The artwork is 5x7... however, when you download the actual file, it is 5.5 x 7.5.  I allowed a quarter inch border to make it easier to trim for framing. If you mount it, just cut it clean to the image.

Which Came First...

Okay...it's obvious I have a thing for signs.  And I could sit at my computer for hours using Photoshop- especially when I get an idea in my head.  My Mother's birthday is coming up soon, and I wanted to make something I knew she'd like.  My parents don't read my blog (heck, I have to call them ahead of time if I send them an email) so she hasn't seen any of the vintage signs I've been creating.

The creative juices must have been flowing pretty good on this day.... I had the design done in less than an hour and I love the way it turned out!  The frame was really what inspired me- it's an odd size (12 " square on the inside dimensions) and came just as you see it.... distressing and all.  It's the first one I've made when I haven't had to paint, wax and buff the frame before I could put it all together. And my Mother has a blue kitchen, so it was meant to be!

I have one identical frame left in my stash so I may have to make one for myself!

Just in case you're running a little behind on the gift giving scene for Father's Day, I've created 2 gift tags for you this week.

This one is on our popular black board background with white lettering.  This is printed on white card stock.

If you have a colored card stock, I've created this tag with black text to be printed on the color stock of your choice.

What better way to celebrate the things you enjoy doing than by passing them along.  Each Saturday, I'm hoping to share one of the items I've created during the week with anyone and everyone that might need it.

With graduations coming up, and Father's Day right around the corner, this chalkboard inspired gift tag just might come in handy!

The card itself measures 3"x1.5".  I've created a PDF with 12 tags on the sheet to use now and possibly later.  I print mine on white card stock.  Just print out your sheet, cut the individual tags out (I use a paper cutter, but plain 'ole scissors work just as well), punch a hole in the corner and attach with ribbon... or baker's twine... or whatever you have.  I happen to like seam binding and keep spools of it on hand in several colors.
